There’s a Latte Changes with our Coffee!

Introducing our new fresh roasted, Southern Italian coffee blends that are roasted in a traditional Italian fashion. This is how we take you South, one sip at a time!

Capri – Southern Italian Espresso
The Capri blend is roasted medium-dark + masterfully blended to achieve a velvety-smooth flavor profile. This roast produces magnificent crema + represents the essence of what espresso should taste like. Hints of fresh-baked bread +almonds pair with a dash of natural, earthy undertones to create a blend that is sure to satisfy the most discerning palates.

Abruzzo – Medium Roast Coffee
This medium-bodied Central Italian blend offers a delicate aroma + clean taste, with subtle nutty undertones. Abruzzo finishes with a soft, yet bright + savory flavor profile that leaves you wanting one more sip.

Campania – Dark Roast Coffee
Campania is our darkest roast – deep and robust, with hints of cocoa + honey. Bold, but not overpowering, this coffee has a rounded flavor profile that lends to a pleasant taste + satisfying sweetness.

Bringing the South to You…
One Sip at a Time!

So we all know how the saying goes: April Showers bring May flowers. But what happens when January, February + March showers just brings on more showers? While it’s true that continuous rain can have some negatives effects for some, we thought it much more beneficial to focus on the positives:

              • In every movie or song, it’s always better to be dancing or singing in the rain.
              • Without rain there would be no rainbows!
              • Puddle jumping would be impossible without rain!
              • Lots of rain means no water restrictions!
              • Rain is a great excuse to stay in bed watching t.v.
              • Everything stays green!
              • The patter of rain drops is a soothing sound.
              • Rain teaches us to appreciate the sun!

And finally….when you have no one to blame, you can blame it on the rain!

We hope this rain doesn’t have you down but if it does, visit us + enjoy our new fresh roasted, Southern Italian coffee blends. The beans are roasted in a traditional Italian fashion. We like to think we are taking you South, one sip at a time!

Make Nice

A kind gesture can go a long way but who would have thought that the kind acts of two Nova Scotia teens would start such a positive revolution? The teens bought  + distributed 50 pink shirts after a male ninth grade student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt during the first day of school. This was the boys’ way of taking a stand against bullies. The concept gained traction and has become synonymous to standing up against all forms of bullying….years later the official Pink Shirt Day was introduced + every year the iconic pink shirts are sold  + worn on Pink Shirt Day.

The shirt changes each year in both design + message. But whether the message is “Bullying Stops Here”, “Kindness is One Size Fits All”, or this year’s, “Make Nice”, the point is clear…. bullying is bad + affects everyone.  The good news is that during the past few years there has been a shift in our society – campaigns have been created to bring more awareness in an attempt for peace and people find themselves being more thoughtful of their actions.

We ask that you all be mindful of your actions and invite you to join the cause. Raise awareness by wearing Pink on Pink Shirt Day –  shirts, scarfs, socks, hair pins, lipstick, wrist bands, shoelaces, earrings, ….or, the official Pink Shirt Day T-Shirt. It doesn’t matter how you to choose to “think pink”….it only matters that you do!

Visit us at any Take Five Café + show your pink. We will all be wearing the official Pink Shirt Day t-shirt + look forward to seeing you on Wednesday February 22nd, 2017.

Staying Warm in the Cold

For most, hot chocolate brings back fond memories…

Of catching snow flakes as they fall + making snowmen 3 feet tall
With carrot noses, rocks as eyes, wearing scarves + hats of every size.
Making crunching sounds with each step, with boots too big + feet quite wet.
Of sledding down a small park hill, wearing toques + ear muffs to beat the chill.
Or eating snow when feeling hot + throwing snow balls trying not to get caught.
Sporting red rosy cheeks , dripping  nose, very cold fingers + frozen toes.
Going home to undress layer by layer, the scent of chocolate filling the air.
And seeing hot cocoa at the table + taking sips when one is able.
The taste of chocolate never gets old, a delicious way to stay warm in the cold!

We have the perfect Hot Chocolate waiting for you! With the cold snap still in the air, nothing is more delicious than savoring a rich Hot Chocolate beverage. And what’s better than a Classic Hot Chocolate? Try our Toasted Coconut Hot Chocolate.  Wherever you hope to be on cold days this season, let one of our hot chocolates transport you!

The Christmas tree stands waiting for décor.
The mantle is cleared but no garlands in sight,
The stockings aren’t hung cause the hooks are not right!
The night to bake cookies seems to be on hold,
And the egg nog is sour cause it wasn’t kept cold.

Pumpkin – More than a Scary Face!

It’s notoriously famous for being called a Jack-O-Lantern but most people simply know it as a pumpkin. You can carve it, display it or eat it.  For some, it’s a seasonal ingredient to introduce to recipes such as Pumpkin Pie, but for children? For children, the appearance of pumpkins tells them that candy collecting is around the corner!

But the pumpkin has evolved. Centuries ago it was used to make lanterns – the hollowed piece was the perfect housing unit for candles keeping winds + weather at bay. It has also had its share of recipes having been boiled, baked, mashed or roasted. And more recently? It’s a scent + flavour that is now infused into coffee beverages, scented candles + more! Pumpkin is so easy to prepare why not introduce it to your favourite muffin, pie or soup recipe?

How to Prepare Pumpkin for your next recipe:

  1. Select a couple of small pumpkins. Cut the pumpkin in half. With a spoon or a scoop, scrape out the seeds and pulp from the center. Seeds can be kept for roasting.
  2. Place pumpkin pieces on a baking sheet + roast in a 350-degree oven for 45 minutes, or until pumpkin is fork-tender. The pieces should be light golden brown when done.
  3. Peel the skin from the pumpkin pieces + place in a food processor or blender. Add a few tablespoons of water to create a smooth texture.
  4. Use the puree immediately or freeze in 1 cup measurements for easy additions to recipes. Freezer bags work well.

You can use the prepared pumpkin in your own recipes or visit us at Take Five to try one of our pumpkin treats – Pumpkin Cranberry Scone or Pumpkin Pear Muffin. Can’t get enough? Try a little Pumpkin Spice in your next latte recipe!

And you thought pumpkins were just for carving!
